Kroonenberg Groep has reached an agreement with the Municipality of Meppel regarding the zoning plans for the Keyserstroom redevelopment project. The plans for the renovated shopping centre call for enhanced consumer experience and interaction as well as more space for new functions such as food service outlets and a cinema.

The Keyserstroom Shopping Centre is located on the northern side of Meppel’s main shopping district. Its exterior consists of a series of façade elements reminiscent of early 20th-century architecture that line Kruisstraat which is accessed via Hoofdstraat. The entrance to the parking facility inside the shopping centre is located at the rear of the complex on Noteboomstraat.

This shopping centre, which provides approx. 10,000 m², will undergo a radical renovation based on a design created by architectural firm E UP Design. One of these changes will be a large open space (300 m²) in the central hub, giving the interior a lighter, more open and transparent look. The existing shops on the ground floor will be moved to new locations, and new chain stores will be added as well as food service outlets including a terrace at the front. The parking facility will be upgraded, and the retail space formerly occupied by V&D will become a 4-screen cinema complex on the first floor that is expected to attract around 100,000 visitors a year. This will add to the vibrancy of this part of the city.

Alderman Roelof Pieter Koning: We are extremely pleased that Kroonenberg Groep is going to update and redevelop Keyserstroom. It’s going to be a modern shopping centre with a parking facility that meets all of today’s requirements. Together with the municipal quartermaster’s office and Kroonenberg Groep, we are considering how to fill the remaining unoccupied square metres. But the best news for Meppel residents is that we will again have a cinema in the centre of town. All in all, this is a wonderful development for Meppel.’

The permit procedure will start in June 2017 after which the renovation is expected to begin in the autumn of 2017. The official reopening of the shopping centre will take place in the middle of 2018. Meanwhile, the shopping centre will remain open during construction activities.
